What Is Multiple Sclerosis (MS)? MS is a disease which can affect anyone and in the UK alone there are 85,000 people facing the challenge of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). People often experience a wide range of symptoms associated with damage to the central nervous system.
For some people, Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is characterised by periods of relapse and remission, for others it has a progressive pattern. For everyone it makes their life unpredictable. You cannot catch Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and as yet there is no cure. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) has been a recognised condition for over 150 years.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is the result of damage to a substance called myelin – which is a protective sheath surrounding the nerve fibres of the central nervous system. When the myelin is damaged it interferes with messages between the brain and other parts of the body.
The aim of the Multiple Sclerosis Society is to end the devastating effects of MS as well as offering care and support to people living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
